제가 여덟 살이던 날을 기억합니다. 오후 주산 수업을 마치고 나오는데 갑자기 하늘이 열리더니 폭우가 쏟아졌습니다. 비가 너무 세차게 내리자 20여 명의 아이들이 건물 처마 밑에 웅크리고 있었습니다. 길 건너편에도 비슷한 건물이 있었는데, 마치 거울을 들여다보는 것처럼 처마 밑에 또 다른 작은 군중이 보였습니다. 쏟아지는 빗줄기, 제 팔과 종아리를 적시는 습기를 보면서 문득 깨달았습니다. 저와 어깨를 맞대고 서 있는 이 모든 사람들, 그리고 건너편에 있는 모든 사람들이 저마다의 '나'로 살아가고 있었다는 것을요. 저와 마찬가지로 그들 모두 이 비를 보고 있었습니다. 제 얼굴에 촉촉이 젖은 비를 그들도 느끼고 있었습니다. 수많은 1인칭 시점을 경험하는 경이로운 순간이었습니다.

글을 읽고 쓰면서 보낸 시간을 되돌아보니 이 경이로운 순간이 몇 번이고 되살아났습니다. 언어의 실을 따라 또 다른 마음 속 깊이로 들어가 또 다른 내면과의 만남. 가장 중요하고 긴급한 질문을 실에 매달아 다른 자아에게 보내는 것. 그 실을 믿고 다른 자아에게 보내는 것입니다.

어렸을 때부터 저는 알고 싶었습니다. 우리가 태어난 이유. 고통과 사랑이 존재하는 이유. 이러한 질문은 수천 년 동안 문학이 던져온 질문이며, 오늘날에도 계속되고 있습니다. 우리가 이 세상에 잠시 머무는 것의 의미는 무엇일까요? 무슨 일이 있어도 인간으로 남는다는 것은 얼마나 어려운 일일까요? 가장 어두운 밤, 우리가 무엇으로 이루어져 있는지 묻는 언어, 이 지구에 사는 사람들과 생명체의 일인칭 시점으로 상상하는 언어, 우리를 서로 연결해주는 언어가 있습니다. 이러한 언어를 다루는 문학은 필연적으로 일종의 체온을 지니고 있습니다. 필연적으로 문학을 읽고 쓰는 작업은 생명을 파괴하는 모든 행위에 반대되는 위치에 서 있습니다. 문학을 위한 이 상이 주는 의미를 이 자리에 함께 서 있는 여러분과 함께 나누고 싶습니다. 감사합니다.
